Im not sure about the Explorer/Mountaineer but in the vans it's all heat or all a/c switched by a vac motor. I'll bet it defaults to heat.

steering shaft should disconnect inside the car at the floor with a single pinch bolt. shifter disconnects under the hood, probably just use a pry bar and pry it out of park.

Ive been looking at a specialized almost like that. Gave it a test ride Holy smokes what a difference from my 93 Marin and the price seems reasonable. 28 inch wheels are a big plus.

I installed hydronic heat in my house with pex. Its quick and easy with no need to sweat copper in the crawl space. the crimper was about $150 I think.

ford went to 134 in the explorers in 1994 looks like the went to it in 93 in some vans. Shops have testers that will tell you what refrigerant is inside but i would say its safe to assume its 134.
