There's a bit of movement as the bearing is encased in rubber but it isn't much. There's no looseness and the fasteners are tight. I see what you mean though --- in the picture they sure look loose.

I have a 1985 300D with 330K. The car is relatively smooth even at highway speeds but there's a pretty noticeable vibration at 18mph. IThe vibration is gone past 20mph. Acceleration makes it worse....

1985 300D (W123) with bowden cable and VCV. Suddenly on the hway today transmission dropped from 4th gear to 3rd. Letting off the fuel I could coax it back to 4th then it would slip back down again....
