What, exactly, did the back look like? What type of connector was present?

Is there a part number present? I am unable to find any reference to a sealed beam lamp having been used on a NA W123.

The black knobs are used to aim the lights; there is no need to touch them. Perhaps your "missing" white knobs have been replaced with ordinary nuts. Same concept.
