Think I found it, the plugs would fit nicely on the old fashioned glow plug switch that has been jerry rigged elsewhere. No idea why it would need three + terminals though.

Edit: It was four...

Definitely original, as in it comes from a Mercedes loom, but whether the loom is original to the vehicle is another question.

Tried tracing it back to the fuse box,...

Firstly, the car ( ambulance ) is a bit of a Frankenstein, it was originally a 230 and is now a 300D. The electrics have been messed around with, fluorescent lighting in the back and a ceiling fan...
