Question Which polishing pads to use?

Hi Guys,
After reading several threads on orbital buffers, I bit the bullet and got the Poter-Cable 7424 for $119.

I did a search to see what others are using for polishing pads and checked Meguiar's website, but still don't know what the best pads are to use.

I've been applying wax (Meguiar's) by hand. I've learned that doing it by hand (using the supplied applicator) in ONE direction helps prevent the appearance of swirls afterward. That method has worked fine for me.

Do you all think that's a good method to apply the wax? I figured I'd use the orbital buffer only for removing the wax and buffing to a final shine (or just the latter part).

What pads do you all recommend? What sizes? I got a "kit" that included:

!. one 6" hook and loop contour pad with 6 dust holes and the appropriate weight

2. a foam polisher. This polisher feels like it would leave scratch marks, so I'm hesitant to use it.

Any advice on the method of applying/ removing wax and the appropriate pads is greatly appreciated!

I use the Meguiar's 9006 foam finishing pad with everything, #9, #7, and Gold Class. I use it with their 'hook and loop' adapter plate, and use a different 9006 pad for each product (labeled on the back of the foam pads so they don't get mixed up.) It doesn't cause any scratches or swirls, and is used mostly for application of the products. It is the best way I have found yet for applying products.

Removal has always been done by hand with cotton terry towels, but next time I am going to try using their microfiber bonnets and see how that works. Removing product by machine has always been unsatisfactory for me, as it builds up too fast on the cotton bonnets I used. The folded terry towels works better for me. I don't know if you saw this thread on the detailing day at Mequiar's, but there is a lot of useful info there.

Use the foam pad. I only use the polisher to apply the wax, not buff it off. For that, try a micro fier cloth.

Physically, how do I use the pad to applyl the wax? Do I try to stick the pad into the can of wax or something? Hope this question isn't too stupid. Thanks for the advice!!

If you are using a paste, take a stick or knife and apply an amount approx equal to two pats of butter to the pad. Spread it around a little like you are buttering you toast. Before you turn the buffer on, smear the pad onto the painted surface to spread the wax around more evenly. Then , turn the polisher on and move it in a direction similar to they way air would flow over the car. The polisher will apply the wax without any swirl marks.

Then according to directions, remove the wax by hand using a cotton terry towel of a micro-fiber one. I like the micro-fiber as they don't scratch and seem to do a better job.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill,

I've got a nice polisher, now I know how to use it properly!

PS I notice you're from Austin. I was just down there last weekend visiting an aunt and uncle who live out on Lake Travis. Man! is it beautiful out there! What I'd give to have my own place on the lake...

I agree, it really is beautiful on the lake. I would ask if you went to the Oasis, but if they live on the lake, no need to go somewhere and pay to drink a margarita and watch the sun set.
