Yeah, what he said^^^. Unbolt the engine mount and jack that side up a few inches. There is really no way to tell you how, you just have to try every possible possition till one works. It is possible, but not fun.

You will have to unbolt your engine from the mounts and lift it to change one of those! PITA but no other way!

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is not what I wanted to hear. I kind of thought of that. I tried lifting one side of the engine but it wouldn't come for enought. That sucks big time. I hate screwing with something twice. I need new motor mounts anyway and I haven't ordered them yet. I guess I'll get to practice.

When you lift the motor with the floor jack, put a block of wood under the oil pan so you do not damage it when lifting!

Getting them out of there is not as hard as getting them back in. What I have done is cut the rubber hose, bring the oil cooler to the bench and get the ferrules off. IMO , you will have to lift the engine. There is a small angle bracket in front of the mount that I remove for easier access.

You're telling me this from personal experience?

On an SD, you do not need to remove the mounts. Removal of the upper hose is relatively easy once the lower hose has been removed first to provide some working room. The hard part is to thread the upper hose behind the mount. It appears that it will not fit and needs to be "forced" at one point. Definitely wrap the end of the tube in duct tape to prevent damaging it. Took me about two hours to wrestle both hoses into place. Most of that time was dealing with the upper hose. The lower hose follows it with no fanfare. |

on my 300d i actually was able to remove and reinstall the lower oil cooler line without moving the engine...just worked it into place over about an hour.

The lower line is not the problem unless the upper line is present. Once the upper line is removed, the lower line can R & R very quickly.

I just replaced mine while I had the engine out of the car.

I replaced both upper and lower when I removed the oil filter housing to replace that gasket. The whole job took less than an hour and was a piece of cake.

So you're saying I should remove the lower hose first (which is possible with the upper one in place) and then remove the upper?

I wish when people give advise they'd state whether they have done the job themselves or not and not just repeat what they have read.
Oil cooler hose replacement on a 617 is not a pleasant job. It's a practical joke trapping the oil cooler lines under the engine mount. Some model years are easier than others depending on what's in the way (A/C hoses, brackets etc). I just replaced the oil cooler hoses on an 83 300D turbo with A/C following the advice given here and I will never do that job the same way again. What a RFPITA I'm still pissed ![]() Unless you are trying to save the old hose, I'd suggest cutting it into pieces to make removal easier. I'd suggest making a custom stainless braided hose that's not trapped under the engine mount and therefore no need to f*ck with them.
