Head liner repair
I am getting down to the seeds and stems of repairs on the 81 240.
Mice chewed a 3 inch hole in the headliner and stashed their loot up there. Other than duct tape, does anyone know of an unobtrusive way to fix it? Interior color is tannish brown[I don't know the official MB color name}

Maybe one of those patches that Mom used to iron on to jeans when the knees wore out. (we were a frugal household)
http://www.amazon.com/Bondex-Iron-Patches-5x5-1-Pkg-Denim/dp/B0001DUU3S I might be tempted to try it on a parts car first, but short of replacing the headliner. Personally I've seen a lot of attempts at headliner repair, none of which looked worth a sh**. Otherwise, I would try a very light spray on glue and a piece of matching fabric. Spray the back of the fabric then hold it to the headliner until it sets? Last edited by cmbdiesel; 03-15-2009 at 10:04 AM. Reason: added amazon link |

Yeah, I figured it ultimatelywould be some sort of cobjob.
If I can get a piece of an old headliner that would work. I guess I'll post a shout out to the forum for a piece of somebody's parts car I have used a really great HD fabric/leather/ poly adhesive. I need to order more. My mother used those patches too.

Well let us know if that works....
The headliner was the only almost perfect thing in my 240D... Last weekend I was putting a 2x4 piece of plywood in the back seat and tore about a 3 to 4 inch triangle shaped hole in the right rear hearliner portion.....made me physically ill.... Right now I have a peice of clear packing tape on it to prevent it from waving as a constant stupidity reminder in the rearview mirror...... Very depressed about this.... I hope someone comes up with some kind of patch that will last and not look too bad.....

headliner
Just order a new one , really there not that expensive, I think I paid a hundred dollars for one a couple of years ago, you have to have patence putting it in and the proper adhesivem plus if you have a sun roof be sure to order the right one so you will get the peice for the sun roof. order from Phil I'm almost sure he can get it, if not Mercedes classic in Ca. can, or several other places you can order from.\

If you can get a piece of duct tape or of that packing tape to adhere to the backside of the area around the hole, you might be able to then press the torn piece (or patch) to the tape. It would at least be a decent temporary solution.

I've been looking for new/used headliners for my 240d for months (not that motivated) and the best price I've seen for a "correct" headliner is about $250. Gahh has them for $255. I have 1 small (1") L shaped tear, and a missing sunroof panel.
I have decided to order 1 yard of material from Gahh for $50, to do my sunroof panel. I don't think there fabric would work for a tear, though. The sunroof panel in my car, (that I tore out and threw away) had been repaired with a white perforated cloth patch at some point that had come loose. It didn't look very good. I like the idea of taping it from the back. I think it might look better than the iron on patch type thing I had on my sunroof.

I was wondering if you could just buy the correct material from an upholstery supply company, take off the existing material, and, using it as a pattern, cut the new material to fit? Normally, I would be tempted to try that myself, but I no longer have the time to get into a project like that.
Had anybody else here tried doing that?

Headliner Repair
If the headliner is the original you are running on borrowed time. I just had the liner replaced on my 92 300E because it started to sag and come loose from the roof. It cost me $350.00 and it looks like a factory job. The redo was completed in 4hrs. Heat from the sun over the years caused the old headliner to deteriorate and separate from the roof. Except for the liner beginning to sag it still looked good.
