couldnt have said it better

i tend to stay away from mb gassers for a reason, have yet to get a good reliable one where im not wrenching on it all the time. Since i dont have a deep wallet or a good warranty i stay away

not to hijack the thread, but are MB diesels so reliable that they do not take a lot of money to maintain? I have spent about 3-3500 in repairs on my gasser in the last three years, but I always attributed that to it just being old and having lots o miles. I have not touched the engine at all. It would seem to me that a diesel would be more expensive?

I don't really want to start an argument with some die hard debaters, otherwise I'll just close the thread, but I think there is a lot of needless fear with these cars.

By the early 2000s the 4 matic system was well sorted and don't seem to have problems. The funky brake system has another 5 years of warranty left on it... All that leaves is the airmatic suspension system ($1000 if a shock goes bad or $2500 if the pump fails) and the 1000+ secondary electronic that may fail. I only plan on keeping this car 2-3 years and adding 15-25k on it.

Let's face it, our W123s and W126s of the golden era of Mercedes are getting old and needy. We're facing similar bills for front end rebuilds, timing chains and guides, transmissions, and on, and on, and on.

You get into the W124, and you have similar multi-thousand dollar issues along with age related issues. Head gaskets, transmissions, evaporators, and on, and on, and on.

Perhaps a 210? Nope, same very, very expensive issues with modern electronic failures.

I agree that the best work of Mercedes was from the late 70s to 1995, but these cars are getting to be 15-30 years old. I will still use Ol' Turbo for most of my road trips, but its needed thousands to get where it needs to be for daily and road trip duty.

I'm just saying that all Mercedes are a losing proposition if one plans to keep it for the long haul. Am I a scared of the airmatic dropping to the ground with this W211? Yes... Just as I was scared of my AC quitting in my W124, and having a catastrophic runaway with my W123. Its a roll of the dice, each variable (age, mileage, maintenance, quality, technical advancement) contributing to the probablitiy of failure.
