new Book on W124

a little about what the book is about : (pulled from their site)

This book is an E-class buyer’s guide, maintenance handbook and technical reference source all wrapped into one. It is full of tech tips, service hints and system descriptions, plus lots of insightful information about the W124 E-Class chassis.

This E-Class Owner’s Bible™ can help steer you through the purchase of your first Mercedes-Benz, provide the information necessary to maintain your E-Class to factory standards, give you the assurance to speak knowledgeably to your service professional and provide you with the hot setup for better road handling.

The prospective buyer will also find tips on what to watch out for, why a pre-purchase inspection is important and why one model may be preferred to another. Do-it-yourself owners will discover a huge hands-on maintenance chapter to help keep their E-Class at peak efficiency.

To bring you this authoritative volume, Bentley Publishers has teamed up with Stu Ritter, a 25-year independent Mercedes-Benz repair shop owner/technician and current technical editor of The Star (the magazine of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America).

Features:

Comprehensive maintenance procedures, including HVAC microfilter replacement, brake pad and rotor replacement and engine oil and fluid change procedures listing the necessary tools, tightening torques and fluid capacities.

Year-by-year analysis of E-Class technical highlights, including the inspiring 500E sports sedan and when the multi-cam M104 engine replaced the M103 single cam workhorse.

Buying tips on how to get the best car for the least amount of money, things to look for during the test-drive and how having a prepurchase inspection can potentially save you thousands of dollars.

Seasoned advice on choosing the right repair shop, be it an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, an independent specialist or an all makes–all models shop.

Detailed technical information on vehicle systems, including engines, suspension, drivetrain, body and interior features.

Performance modifications, including a listing of all the parts needed to upgrade to the Sportline suspension.

A brief historical overview of Mercedes-Benz, the world’s oldest car company.

* Not bad for $40 huh?

Well its finally out and I got it.

Its very nice and compliments a w124 owner.

This is the only book i've come across that talks about all the w124 models such as the diesel engines and the v-8 versions

First it starts off with the history, various components...the last section deals with mods u can do like changing the headlights, suspension components and such.

Oh the other cool thing is a great troubleshoot guide....it says which models usually have the problem and what is causing it. It actually talks about the head gasket problem with the M104 engine!

Exclamation

Is this actually a GOOD QUALITY manual I can keep in the garage, or just an enthusiast's book with a few directions for simple repairs? With the Bentley manual for the BMW E36, you could almost take the car apart, and put it right back together again...is the W124 manual comparable? Thanx!

It is not the same as a Chilton or Bentley manual.

It will not tell you how to rebuild a car or take it apart.

It has a general (and sometimes detailed) description of the car, its history, changes throughout the product run, and goes throught each sub-system: brakes, electrical, engine, fuel injection, etc.

It also has a pretty thorough troubleshooting guide at the back of the book for typical problems.

I think it's a great book and a good read. Every W124 owner would enjoy it. But, it's not a repair manual.

Totally agree

I bought the book BEFORE I purchased my first MBZ. It contains a wealth of information on the history and things to watch for, but after buying the car, I rarely look at it now.

There are better guides to help one repair their Benz. I have consulted it about a few items and it gives only sketchy detail. I logged on to Alldata.com and purchased a 1 year subscription that gives some good web-based detail (sometimes) on my W124 and engine type (Diesel). It gives you a detailed look at all the recalls and Service Bulletins. But again I could not get enough detail to find a particular relay module that controlled a faulty function. So I took it to Johnny (reformed Jaguar mechanic).

He uses Alldata CD's that have it ALL! They are pretty expensive though.

If you plan on getting your hands dirty, the Haynes manual is the one to go for.

The Factory CDs are ok if you can get them for a tenner or so, but they are written in a very unhelpful way that makes each job more difficult than it need be.......
