Over and above the call of duty ~ FL mechanic

Need a good mechanic in central FL? Here’s a small story about what my mechanic did for me.

On Sunday I traveled 2 hours down state to his shop so we could replace a few parts on my 79 280CE. At about 7:00pm everything was back in place and we were ready to leave, then we noticed that the fuel pressure regulator was leaking. As it turns out the small weld that holds the female fitting on the regulator had cracked and was leaking fuel from when you put the hose back on. At that point the car wasn’t fit to drive 2 hours back home. Pierre was willing to drive me back home then deliver the car to me on Monday. Of course I wouldn’t have let him do that. That night Pierre calls his friend to see if he had a regulator that would work good enough to get me back home. He had one but it was a different part # but Pierre thought it would work, it was our only option so Pierre drove over to the next town at about 8:00pm to get the regulator. He installed the regulator in the car and it worked, didn’t leak at all and it ran great. Pierre really went the extra mile for me so that I could get home last night. Everything that he took apart was put back together just like it was when the car was put together 30 years ago. He is the only mechanic I would fully trust to work on my car. There isn’t a problem to big or small for him. I would highly recommend him to work on your car, and it is definitely worth the travel. Its not often you find a guy like Pierre in the Mercedes community. He usually only likes to work on cars older than 1993 but depending on the problem I’m sure he could help you out.

He will allow the owner to watch him work and work on the car with him. If you are in or around Central FL give him a call and setup an appointment. Very good prices too!!

Pierre did it again. Yesterday I went in to reseal my steering box but that didn't really work out for us so we ran to his parts supplier and got a new box, put it in, and had it centered in no time.

Pierre also noticed I had a shifter bushing missing so we replaced that and a vacuum line for the transmission was missing so we put a new one in and had to adjust the vacuum modulator. Pretty good day for my SDL and Pierre was a great help in getting it all sorted out.

I wrote down Pierre's number after reading the initial post, but didn't think I'd need to call as soon as I did.
I was on my way home down 429 and I had my cruise control set at 65. A truck was moving up fast in my rear view so I figure I accelerate a little and get in the right lane. I push the cruise switch to accelerate and the car kept getting faster. I tapped the brake to cancel the cruise control but that didn't work. I had to ride the brake like crazy to get the car stop and pull over on the shoulder and turn the key off. I'm new to MB and didn't know what was happening. I had Pierre's number on the piece of paper beside me, so I figured I'd give him a call. I called and started to explain my problem and the first thing Pierre asked was if I was safely off the road. I knew it was going to be a good phone call - I told him what model I drove and he told me it sounded like I was having throttle linkage problems.
I tap the gas pedal and it clicked and the car didn't rev like crazy on start up. Problem solved. Pierre offered to service the throttle linkage for free if I brought it to him. I'm taking my car to have him look over it for sure now, but it won't be for free.

From the standpoint of an honest MB technician, Vegetable oil is a threat to your diesel engine's mechanical integrity.

And how, exactly, was the "mechanical integrity" threatened, of the (which?) diesel engine modified in __?__fashion that you personally ran or monitored for__?__ miles on (what type?) vegetable oil that had been treated in __?__fashion ?

Issuing such blanket bromides is about as useful as saying that riding in a vehicle is a threat to your bodily integrity.

Wink

OOO what do we have here?

A know it all?

I run into a few of you once in a while.

You have no data to prove WVO isn't harming your engine, and I do.

In fact, call up any intelligent Mercedes-Benz technician and they will agree with me.

On any WVO engine, give me two things:

all of the injector pressure pop test readings and a cylinder leak down test data sheet and the results will speak for themselves.

It's all in fun, though. The only reason I make this sort of statement is because of the experiences I have had with these little veggie monsters.

None of them were really positive.

"OOO what do we have here?

A bit early for the ad hominem isn't it? People normally resort to it after they run out of arguments and their position is shown to be untenable.... oh,.. wait!

"In fact, call up any intelligent Mercedes-Benz technician and they will agree with me."

That would not be very intelligent of them unless their study, training, expertise and experience with combustion of vegetable oils in diesel engines matches their knowledge of Mercedes-Benz.

"On any WVO engine, give me two things:
all of the injector pressure pop test readings and a cylinder leak down test data sheet and the results will speak for themselves. " Whoa, ease off the boost pardner, There exist engines out of spec -closest they ever came to vegetable grease was parked at a McDonald's.

"It's all in fun, though. The only reason I make this sort of statement is because of the experiences I have had with these little veggie monsters."

Less fun is -assuming expertise in areas where you don't have it can detract from your reputation in areas you do.

“ None of them were really positive.” I don't doubt that. But we're still left with the following issues:
1. not a large enough sample of cars
2. no control over prior condition and other issues with each particular car
3. no control on proper implementation and use of equipment or strategies designed to remedy problems that can be caused by burning vegetable oil
4. No control over fuel quality and treatment

A sort of best practices almanac on vegetable oil burning do's and don'ts has crystallized out over the years, especially in Europe where triple the U.S. fuel prices has people accumulating hundreds of thousands of miles on vegetable oils. One can get a solid orientation on the topic on the Internet.
Good mechanics well versed on the topic are highly appreciated. And let's face it, many people buy these cars for the purpose of running vegetable oil.

How about this for a signature:

Use of Vegetable Oil as a fuel without consultation and supervision by a mechanic with expertise in the area of VO use can lead to severe engine damage.

I asked for leakdown test data, and some injector pop test readings, not a load of crap.

I think you jsut want to argue. I'm on this forum to give people reliable and accurate information.
hard numbers speak for themselves. I don't see any.
We're going to have to ignore your speculative alchemy and horsebabble.

Again Pierre does great work.

Pierre and Torey helped me out by removing the valve body assembly on my E320 Cabriolet and cleaning it and making sure everything was in order. Once it was put back in the car shifted normally and finally shifted perfectly into 4th. I also helped lol but Pierre did the fun part with the valve body assembly.

motor and trans mounts

About what would it cost to have the motor mounts and the trans mount replaced in a 1973 220D with a/c/115.110? I just moved to Pensacola and one shop gave me a price of $448.75 labor and $174.65 parts +tax and supplies.
If I were not so beat up and disabled I could do the job myself. I also have a '67 200D fin tail 4speed.
