Climate Control turns on and off by itself (1995 C220); A/C does not work
 

My girlfriend bought a used '95 C220 a few weeks ago. The car has a strange problem where the climate control will shut off by itself after a few minutes, or, if it is turned off, it will come on by itself with the heat on full blast only to shut back off again a few minutes later. The display comes on with the temperature display in Celsius, but will sometimes randomly switch to Fahrenheit, only to reset to Celsius when it comes on again. When the system is on it seems to function ok, however the A/C does not come on when it is set to a lower temperature (I'm not sure if this is related, the A/C system may just need to be recharged). Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or solutions for me? Thanks in advance for your help.
