I have a 1973 Mercedes 220 Diesel. It slips in first second and third after stopping or downshift when turning corner. Okay if you go to neutral and back to drive. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

How about checking the transmission fluid, or, better yet, changing the filter. Poor thing is probably all mucked up with 27 years worth of "stuff".
