I have a 1983 240D. I took out the instrument cluster to replace some bulbs and replace the clock. When I reassembled everything the temp and fuel guages are jumping all over the place, particularly on acceleration. From previous posting, it sound obvious that it is improper grounding. My question is, how do I correct this? It sound like I might have cracked the circuit board, can this be repaired. Is it easier and more effecient to run a wire from the back of the instrument cluster, the metal housings for the fuel and temp guages and run that to the same ground that they currently have or a new ground? I am sure that this could be more trial and error, but I would appreciate any feedback/experiences.

We repair various forms of instruments and gauges in German autos and could repair yours or replace pieces with used.

We also could send you what you need, but you can probably fix it yourself by backtracking and locating the problems. The chances are that all you need to do is retighten the cluster mounting screws or the nuts where the individual gauges are mounted to the cluster PC board. Loosen then retighten. It would also save time if you removed the gauge cluster and closely viewed the printed circuit. The ground trace is pretty easy to follow.
