Rounded off hex screw
I was trying to open up the window motor of my 83 300sd. I got one of the hex screws off without issues. The other one was very stubborn and partly due to frustration, I ended up rounding it off. It is one of those hex key screws. I don't know why they even bother to use those things. How can I unscrew it or just remove it one way or the other. thanks for any help.

Stuck hex bolts are the reason I bought a dremel kit. Using the little cut-off disc, you can either make a slot and use a screwdriver to remove the bolt, or completely remove the head and deal with the stud. Hopefully, there would be enough stud sticking out for you to work with, and it would be easier to get at with the window motor disassembled.

I was afraid i would need some sort of special tool. I assume they would sell this at home depot.

you can also try twisting it off with vise grips. spray some pb blaster or kroil to loosen it up first. and yes you can get dremel stuff at home depot. there are knock offs that are of somewhat lower quality you can get for much less than dremel or craftsman versions (at harbor freight, pep boys etc.).

do you think autozone would carry it?

I'm with schumi and the Vise Grips idea. I've used them many times with great success. Every man, oops, everyone should own Vice Grips anyway, there will always be a need for them sooner or later.
If the screw is a recessed, then you're more or less limited to drilling it out. |
Sears sells a fancy schmantzy bolt/nut/stud remover set. It should work on the round outside head, I'd think. http://www.sears.com/sr/craftsman/whatsnew/cr_ct_cooltooldetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&Tool_Id=45
