A hole in the turbo? Yikes!!!

New is on the order of $1500, I think, maybe less. A cartridge (bearing housing, shaft, and wheels) is about $350 or so. Used will be less if you can find one, probably $300 to $700, but I don't know for sure.

Do you know how you got a hole in it? Where is it? If only a compressor housing or turbing housing is toast, you may be able to replace it (although I'd suggest a replacement turbo -- gonna need a cartridge if something flew in...)

I have a professionally rebuilt Mercedes turbo available if you're interested. Email me at md21722@yahoo if interested.

Labor is about 4 hours for someone experienced.

If you have a California car and it stills has the "Trap Oxidizer" in place it could be the source of the problem. The catalyst has a tendency to break down, send material directly into the exhaust impeller, and the combination causes a hole to develop in the exhaust housing. I believe MB issued a bulletin regarding Turbo-Diesels for model year 87, would be worth exploring if your vehicle is equipped with a “Trap Oxidizer!”

Good Luck
