300e Tranny Removal
I'm removing the tranny on a 1987 300e to fix a leak. There is a cable on the right side that goes up to the engine compartment. I believe it is the kickdown cable. Which end should I remove it from. There doesn't seem to be enough room at the tranny end, and I can't really see how it is attached. It seems to be easier to remove it at the intake manifold end. Also is there a trick to get to the top 2 bolts holding the tranny to the engine ? It doesn't look like much room to get any wrenches in there. Any other advice or tips would be appreciated.

Typically, if you don't have a lift, it's much easier to pull engine and transmission together rather than to get the tranny off separately.
I'd disconnect the cable at the engine end if you don't think you can get it loose on the tranny -- it's like a Chevy, undo the clamp and unhook from the lever or valve inside. The only way to remove the upper bolts if you cannot reach them from above is to allow the tranny to hang down while jacking the front of the engine up. Do this with all the rest of the tranny bolts in, please, you DON"T want it to fall on you.... You will need some LONG extensions and probably a swivel. Vastly easier to get them out than back in, too -- I believe this is why they were missing from my brother's 75 300D. Factory recommends removing engine and transmission together. Peter |
I have a lift in my garage so that helps. I wasn't sure if there was an access panel of some sort to get at the upper bolts. I think I read that somewhere. Must be a different model. Oh well I guess I'll let the tranny droop and try with some long extensions. Everything else is disconnected and ready to go.
