Nah, I wouldn't do it, not NOW. Maybe in another 100,000 or so, seriously. They are double row and really good for "practically" the life of the engine. There in no service interval on it at all, but the chain tensioner if you feel like it, it's not hard to do. I wouldn't unless I knew there was a problem though.

I bought some parts today. Sorry guys for taking so long. I'll probably do the repair on Monday or Tuesday.

This is the front cover gasket "lip seal" MB OEM #103 015 02 20

This is the front cover seal MB OEM # 018 997 79 47

This is the famous sealant which was MB OEM#002 989 73 20 10 which has been changed to #003 989 98 20 10

I thought Gilly said that MB had given up on their own product and was now recommending Locktite 5900. The only problem is finding Locktite 5900. I was wondering why all the parts stores only carry Permatex products. I contacted Locktite and found out they own Permatex. I've had to order the 5900 to the tune of $30.00 for a 300ml tube.

The loctite 5900 is not available where I live. I can special order the 300ml tube. Here is the problem...It costs $48.00 and is only sold in a case of 10. If I want to buy 1 tube they will charge me a 30% surcharge which ends up costing $72.00 Canadian and I have to wait at least a week to get it.

You're right. This stuff is not for the general retail market, and anyone buying it buys cases of tubes or tubs. It is really for industrial app. I was fortunate to find a distributer in my town who ordered one tube for me, and I'll have it Monday. The price is $30.00 US.

Who packages the MB OEM stuff? Isn't it supposed to be the same as Loctite 5900? I thought I read that somewhere or am I mistaken?

Go to McMaster Carr's site and do a search on Loctite 5900. they sell it for US$26 for one tube.

Here's their writeup:

Loctite 5900 Silicone Flange Sealant
Loctite 5900 provides an instant seal for flanges and has superior adhesion and flexibility to accommodate joint movement. Also use on sheet metal covers, timing covers, and oil sumps. It is an RTV silicone and reaches full strength at room temperature with good resistance to oil and transmission fluid and is nonslumping, noncorrosive, and low odor. Temperature range is -65° to +400° F, begins to harden in 20 minutes, and reaches full strength in 24 hours. Supplied in a 300-ml (10.1 oz.) cartridge. Color is black. 6708A22 Each $25.67

I'm confused. I thought that the MB stuff is Loctite 5900 with MB packaging. That's why I bought it. It wasn't cheap either. So should I return the MB stuff and buy the original Loctite 5900?

The stuff we used in the shop was gen-yoo-wine Loctite 5900, as per MB. I've never seen Loctite 5900 in a MB "wrapper". I would have to examine this stuff to tell you if it is in fact 5900. Can you read the fine print and see if there is anything indicating who made it, and compare what was written a few posts ago in regards to the characteristics of the product and see if the info on the MB-packaged sealant is the same? You can also examine it, it should be a dark charcoal-black color and have an odor which is sort of similar to vinegar. If in doubt at all get the 5900.

Here's a link to a place offering it for about $16. Maybe check with Phil and see if he can provide it. I believe it is available in a small squeeze tube. The 300ML size is what we used in the shop, it fits into a caulking gun.
