cross post

I'm thinking of purchasing a 71' 300 SEL. any thoughts?
Interior/body look great, engines sounds good but didn't get a chance to look under the hood. What can I expect for maintenance/repairs? The current owner gave me the name of his mechanic but I wanted to get some info before I take the plunge!

any info would help

I just bought a 71 300SEL 6.3. :D Since I live in Long Beach and the car is in Tacoma, I bought it based purely on pictures and the word of the current owner. Since the price was right, I felt I couldn't go too wrong. Even if the car turns out to be a disaster, I should be able to get most of my money back out of it.

In regards to any 300SEL, why do you want the W109 over the W108. They are practically identical, however the W108 does not have the air suspension. Unless you really want the air suspension and the little extra interior trim, you can usually find W108s for bargain prices.

Personally, I like horsepower. The standard 6 is OK and quite reliable, however I currently own a 450SLC and really like that engine. If I hadn't found the 6.3 and didn't want the air suspension, I would have probably bought either a 280SE 4.5 or a 280SEL 4.5. The 4.5 engine is a low revving, cast iron workhorse.
