190e Drive line - quick question

With the 87 190e I have isolated the drive shaft noise to a "Coupling" behind the transmission. The drive shaft is solid from the differential forward including the flex disk, but just ahead of the flex disk is what is loose and is making a slapping sound.

Would someone tell me what this part is.

Also, is this the part where the trans brace needs to be removed?

Thanks in advance,

haasman

Haasman, in looking at the drive shaft, at the trans side before the flex disc is a centering bushing, then the flex disk, the first shaft, then the coupling for the universal joint, the joint, the second shaft and then the final flex disc at the diff. Is the noise up at the first flex disc/centering bushing or at the universal joint?

From the differential forward: There is the long drive shaft, then flex disc and it is whatever is attached forward of that. It seems to be partially hidden by a cross piece.

Thanks for the reply.

Some of those have a balancer on them, I believe, on the tranny tailshaft.

If it's loose and clanking, I believe you can just remove it, but I'm not sure, so won't recommend you do so.

Surely on of the "real" techs will help.

The only other thing that could be loose is the tailshaft itself, either a bad bushing or just loose nut. Never heard of that, though.

Sounds like the bearing or the U-Joint located mid shaft.
