Late Hard Shifting w/ my E320
Alright - I recently got my '97 E320 back from a solid indie - all tuned up from it's 90K check-up which included tranny fluid and filter.
If I shift from revese to drive, with the car close to being warmed up, (55C to 58C) it drops hard into 2nd gear and holds onto 2nd gear up to @4500 RPM. Then it shifts real hard into 3rd gear. It certainly doesn't appear to be the emissions (which normally shifts at 3200 rpm). This only happens when the engine is just below 60C. If the engine is fully warmed, no problem. Thoughts please, oh wise ones. Wrong fluid? Sensor? What do you think????? |
hard ,late shift when cold
sounds like varnish on the valve body of the tranny. Try adding one pint of Marvel Mystery Oil to the tranny. That will usually clean up the varnish. It is also possible a very tiny peice of trash that got into the pressure control valve during the service and is causing it to stick like that. (When in reverse, the oil pressure is at its highest)

Thanks all - so, it sounds like the levels might be off.

Make sure your mechanic used the recommended trans fluid (synthetic Mercedes). Costs around $12/liter.
