Hello, I have been having another problem with my 300E, I have gotten it running great with the help of you all. Well my problem is, the car feels like it is floating at some times, such as after I go over train tracks at about 50mph the car kind of sways around for a second, also if I am following behind a truck on the freeway the front end sways back and forth, also another thing I have noticed is, when I am accelerating and I let off the gas right before it shifts the car jerks to the right when it shifts (I dont know if its related but I am just asking). I'm not a Tech but, it sounds to me like you need new shocks.

Search the 1999 archives for the words "rear suspension link". Your problem is likely in the 5-link rear suspension and I've posted on it a couple times before. I used to own a 300E with the same problem.

I would get two MB# 210 350 33 06 for $25 or less a piece. Find them in the five links (they are the ones that go at a fourty-five degree angle to the direction of travel).

These are the first bushings to wear in the rear and cause the sensation you mention. They also are the cheapest link of the five.

Hi Adam,
I would definitely start with the diagonal links mentioned in Steve's post above. He's provided part #s and an estimated price. We had the exact same symptoms on our 300TE - indeed, the links were at fault.

rear susp links for sure. my 87 300e did the same thing. rear susp work work took care of most of the out of control feeling. i later replaced front struts and front wheel barings. all of this was abt 180 - 200K miles. when i was finished she was as tight as a drum.

Well, today we put a pair of those links on an 88 300E. I forgot that the number I gave is an update of number 201 350 56 06. If you can still find old stock of those numbers thats all you need. If you use the 210 number I gave above you will also need bolt kit 210 350 45 06 $5.25 and sleeve 210 352 00 43 $1.90. BTW my part # price was also from the old number and the 210 350 33 06 new number actually lists for $31.

Looking at the book is it considered to be the thrust arm, track rod, tension strut or the camber strut? From what I can tell the thrust arm is the one that looks to be about 45 degrees to the direction of travel.

Thrust arm, I believe.

I just replaced the thrust arms in my 86 300E, but they didn't supply the sleeves that were connected to the old arms(Steve mentioned these) which couldn't be removed from the old arms. What happens if you do not put the sleeves on. I just did the thrust arms tonight. Am I looking at disaster? By the way, get them from Mercedesshop, at Performanceproducts they're $34.ea

Its hard to place these links even with a picture. Let me try, five links. The easiest is the lower control arm as it runs at the bottom bearing carrier directly toward the middle of the car. Also coming from the lower part of the bearing carrier is the longitudinal strut. From the top of the bearing carrier come the other three. The Camber strut goes directly parallel with the lower control arm toward the center of the car. The "tierod" comes from sort of the middle front of the bearing carrier at an angle to direction of travel and is called "tierod" as it is the adjustable link (it has a cam at the subframe attachment). And that leaves our link in question and I don't know what to call it except "what's left".

BTW I really don't think paying over MB list is a great deal. The arms we put on yesterday we charged $25.50 each plus installation. I often wonder what people are being charged in big city shops if these magazines part stores sell any parts. As in this case they are 10% over MB list.
