Clanking sound from front wheel

Whenever I go over a bump I hear a kind of clanking sound coming from the right front wheel.
It sounds very tinny, almost like the sound of a couple of garbage lids being banged together. If the car had hub caps you would think it was something rattling around in them.
Also, if I touch the breaks lightly I can hear a very similar but shorter sound.
I can't hear either sound if I'm driving with the window up and I've vigorously pushed up and down on the suspension but that makes no sound and feels pretty solid.
I can't imagine anything of any great importance is going to be made of a material that sounds so lightweight.
Anyone got any ideas before I get the wheel off and start poking around?
Cheers
