ATF oil for '85 500SEL
 
Does anyone know what the proper type of ATF is for use in an '85 (german spec.) 500SEL's transmission? The previous owner has been using Dexron/Mercon III.

The car has long had a small ATF leak from the transmission's front seal area.

That's the right stuff. Actually it's Dexron III/Mercon.

Thanks for the information.

I wonder if some of the new ATF formulations that promise to reduce leakage would work? I have been hesitant to try them fearing it might make the problem worse. Any thoughts on this?

Do a search on Trans-X and Lucas transmission additives.
