Convert outside temp gauge to intake temp?
 

I was curious on converting my outside temp gauge to read my intake temp instead. I have gathered some great info on the probe, but my concern is the head unit. From looking through diagnostic threads on the head unit, the head unit may only allow a reading of up to 136 degrees F or 58 degrees C. Can anyone confirm this? If the head unit cuts off at this temperature, I may choose not to try this. Thank you!

I have noticed that my outside temp readout goes blank at a certain temp...for example if I am sitting parked on hot blacktop on a high summer day....so yes, it does have a high reading. What's the hottest an intake temp could get?

The outside temp gauge in my SDL is goofy. It works to about 65*F. Above that it reads very high peaking at 136 when outside temps are above 80*F. So I'd say 136*F is as high as it goes.

You might have better luck adapting this aviation remote sending unit as opposed to trying to change the existing probe - cheap also 100F -285F ($16)

The main purpose for the outside temperature gauge is to advice the driver when freezing temperatures are reached outside, thus switching its reading between the outside temp and the word "I C E".

As almost everything designed by M-B, the unit is installed for safety reasons primarily.

Do you know if that is true for the 202 as well? I don't recall reading anything about that in the manual. Sounds like a neat feature though. Is the sender near the road surface?

it reads 'ice'?i've never had that on mine-'95s500.does this apply to newer readouts or just certain models?

On a W124, the sender is right behind the front license plate

It looks like the unit only scales to 136 degrees F. The reason for looking into this modification is that I just wanted to see the corrilation of boost pressure to intake temp without the clutter of aftermarket gauges. Yes the outside temp gauge is a safety device for icy conditions. I simply choose to watch the weather channel and drive cautiously whenever ice is possible. Just my choice. Thanks for everyone's input to help me decide to do this or not!
