Cruise Control Surges

Have a '87 300DT. On the highway, the cruise control holds speed, but feels as if it is going on and off the pedal about two times per second. Any ideas?

Also, the cruise control stalk switch is pretty ragged out, as if the internal springs are shot. How hard are these switches to replace?

1) Do a search on ARV or air recirculation valve.

2) No idea.

Does your speedo needle fluctuate? The cruise control speed pickup is in the back of the speedo head. If your speedo is fluctuating then your cruise control will also.

The cruise control stalk isn't hard to replace. Remove your steering wheel and then you'll see the remainder of the trims and screws from there.

If your car has a telesoping steering wheel, see if you can pull the cluster without pulling the steering wheel.

Why would I need to pull the cluster? In any case, I can pull the cluster without removing the wheel.

I'm guessing the need to remove the wheel is to replace the cruise control switch - which needs to be done...

Sorry. I thought you were going for the speed sensor.

I only said to fix the speedo cable IF you're speedo needle is jumping, it's the cheapest fix before heading for the control unit which is the next most likely cause of your fault.
