transmission slip reverse 722.4

1992 300D 2.5 Turbo, 187,000 miles, 722.4 transmission.

When the car is cold, and it is put in reverse the transmission slips, with increasing frequency. If I am on an even surface the car will move backward but not respond to increased rpms. If I shift to forward gears and back to reverse several times I feel the reverse engage and everything then seems to work fine. I have driven 1000+ miles since first having the problem. When the car is warm I have only had the reverse slip once. I did a transmission service at 172,000 the level has been good and fluid clean.

Looking at the archives there are several approaches one might take, but I think I have a mix of transmissions. Here are some of the responses to other similiar queries.

re: 722.3 transmission / worn-out B3 reverse clutch / transmission out repair clutch.

Lucas Transmission Fix

re: transmission number not available: Your reverse clutch drum frictions are more than likely worn out. When the clutch pack clearance gets too great it takes a while for the drum to fill with oil and that is what takes time.

Do NOT use any Lucas products in your car.

TRANS-X® STOPS LEAKS & SLIPS!

If the problem is only on reverse gear, definitively you have a problem on the B3 piston. It works stopping the planetary gear that makes the car goes reverse.

re: 722.3: On that car & most others from 1990 -95 with the 722.3 transmission, there is a simple fix for that problem. The band piston seal is bad & the band has too much clearance. Should take less than 2 hrs to fix the problem. & maybe $30-45 in parts

Any quidance appreciated.

You may have revese piston lip seal (boot) damaged cause pressure leaks out to check the lip seal the trans has to remove & take it apart.

sounds like a lip seal to me also .always replace the big o-ring on the front oil pump if this reverse lip seal is being replaced .
