Changed accumulator 89 300 sel, won't start
 

Hello,

I had no fuel coming to my engine (89 300 sel). After some tests, I determined it was the accumulator, I changed it and the filter. Now I am getting gas to my engine, but it won't start. It seems as if the fuel is not getting past the distributor, nothing is coming out of the injectors or the return line. Could I have burnt a relay? Or is there a pump in the distributor I do not know about. I have tried cranking for a long time, priming the engine, etc... but nothing works. The line to the engine blats gas, so I know the line is clean. I am very frustrated. Any help would be appriciated.

Sounds like the problem was either not the accumulator (although it may have been bad, too) or you have a fuel distribultor full of air and it's not clearing as it should.

What you probably need to do next is check fuel pressure -- you may need at least a new fuel filter, too. You must have sufficient pressure in the fuel distributor for the injectors to open, or nothing will come out.

How do I get air out of the distributor?
 

I had no fuel going to the engine until I changed the accumulator. The fuel makes it to the distributor, but not past it. I do not have a presure gauge, but just eye-balling it I can tell that it has enough presure to pass the distributor. How do I get air out of the distributor?

Dean:

If you don't have flow from the pressure regulator (past the distributor) you don't have enough pressure. This can bad fuel pumps, bad fuel pump relay not running them, or a clogged fuel filter. You will have to determine which is bad and repair.

the air should flush out all by itself as the pumps run.

Ok,

When I changed the accumulator, I also changed the filter. I also just changed the relay. Here is the progression:

Car died
Determined that no fuel was coming into engine
Changed fule pump relay - still did not work
Tested pump, worked fine
Changed filter - still did not work no gas coming to engine
Changed accumulator gas flowed imediately to engine
I could change the pump, but I doubt that would help
Could my distributor be bad?

yes, but so could the fuel pump (low pressure). the only way to tell is to measure the pressure and pressure differential between the top and bottom of the distributor.

I personally suspect the fuel pump is low on output (do you have twin pumps or a single one?).

Again, a pressure and flow test is what you need to do next, you are getting to the expensive stuff.

I have a single pump.

I will try to check pressure on the pump tomorrow. But here is why I think the pump is fine...

Prior to fixing the accumulator no gas to engine
After fixing accumulator heavy flow of gas to engine

I know that anything is possible though
