Speedometer Help!

I need to replace my speedometer. Does anyone know what the newest year that I can use is? Do all W124 speedometers work? My car is an 1989. I am going to buy a used instrument cluster from a salvage yard and I'm thinking that the newer the year I can find the better my chances are that I will find lower mileage speedo.

Here is a nice one:

You are kidding right ? Don't know about Canada, but here in the states it is highly illegal to alter the odometer reading on a vehicle. Why would you want to do that ?

You can set the odometer in your car to read out whatever you want, the illegal part is selling the car and not disclosing the change.

I had the one fixed in a BMW not that long ago and it was about $70.00 to replace all the gears. Do a search on the net for speedo repair, some places will do an exchange, just order it and after you replace it send back the core.

actually, in many jurisdictions, just changing the reading on the odometer is against the law.

Thanks for the reply gentlemen.
I am interested only in buying not repairing at this point. Regarding legal issues - as long as I declare that it was replaced and put a sticker to indicate so - I'll be ok.

So does anyone know what years will work? The MB dealer wasn't helpful.
