1965 220 SEb Intermittant driveability problem
[My 1965 220 engine has been completely rebuilt. All accessories rebuilt including ignition, fuel, gas tank etc. On occassion, while driving at normal speed, the car will " Buck, and Surge " for a quarter or half a mile, then smooth out. Taking the car out of gear, the engine will run through the RPM range smoothly, so the problem seems to be Load related. Suggestions ?

The stops on the throttle body and injection pump are set and not adjusted for the idle. Only the air bypass screw and the knob on the back of the injection pump are adjusted with the engine off. Also, test to see if the cold start solenoid on top of the injection pump is energized only during starting.

Wow you are driving a 40 year old car!
Sounds like your engine isn't getting enough fuel! First thing that I would do is replace the fuel filter & check fuel delivery. SHOULD deliver 1 liter of fuel in 30-35 seconds. |
Since the problem is intermittent, I would also check the primary ignition connections. Check that all connections like coil and condensor wires are tight. The condensor is an important part of the ignition on black coiled cars even though you can throw the condensor away on a blue coiled car.

Good point Mr. Autozen. Always check the basics first.
