93 SL500 Revs hunting
I have just bought a '93 SL500 after dreaming of having one for nearly 15 years. It is metalic blue black with very good bodywork and interior. There is a problem though. The car 'hunts' when it idles and idles at around 500rpm then drops down every five seconds to almost stalling. A couple of times the car has actually stalled when Ive idled forward in traffic. Also the gearchanges are really good most times but every now and then the change is quite hard and feels like the gearbox has mis-timed the change. Where do i start. Someone said the gearbox problem could be connected to the incosistant revves and not holding the vacum pump at thr right pressure?????????

I gather that you bought the SL500 privately without having a pre-purchase inspection performed by a MB-trained tech. If that's the case then I suggest taking the car to a local independent mechanic who specializes in MB and has a good reputation for honest, reasonably priced work; and have him diagnose the idling problem and inspect the entire car for existing problems. You failed to mention the mileage on your SL500.
On the other hand if you bought the car from a dealer go back to the Service Department ... you must have some sort of warranty.

I have similar symptoms.
Mine hunts/surges at idle only when temperatures fall below 8degC, after 10 minutes driving and for a periods of 5 minutes max. Then she's completely fine. I'm looking into it and first thought it was a little unmetered air, but alas the Lambda output shows no air leak at all. Mine also very occasionally makes incorrect gear changes. The car tries to shift down from 3rd to 1st when you drop the gear shift into 2nd and it really shouldn't as the speed definitely says 2nd gear to me - ou get this horrible thrust forward and then change into 2nd. I don't think these are connected but an interesting point. Lea
