Need gasser advice, 190E

I'm a diesel guy, know next to nothing about MB gas cars, so be kind..

Was aproached by an old fellow with a pretty clean 84 or 85 190E that from his description droped a valve or broke a t-chain. He wants very little for the car, it's pretty clean in and out, tranny was ok per his word. I work a salvage yard, and my cost for a used motor is about $800. What all fits this
thing? Friend localy said he had a line on a Euro w123 230E or something like that which he thought had the same little 2.3, is this a workable swap?
Any opinions? I know little 201's are not so well thought of, but it'd be a nice little car for the soon-to-be wife I guess. I just don't want to get stuck with something that is a one year only engine or some such, and I don't trust Hollander's info from the computer at work. Thanks for any help...

just rebuild the top end they are good cars, why even consider a full engine change???

Skip the 190E and get the 230E.

iteresting thought, 190e 2.3 16v is faster than the bog standard 230 due to weight but both good cars :)

well, if it did drop a valve, the piston/cyl wall is probibly not so happy, hence I was figuring on a long block.

Is the euro 230e a 16v engine? Special at all?

teky 10-09-2004 06:37 PM

same im sure, just different chassis

The Euro W123 230E has an 8-valve engine.

Ok, so why does everything I read say 84 is pretty specific engine wise, and then 85 to 88 or whatever it is? I looked through the performance products catalog and see a few differences but nothing really conclusive. Can I put an 85+ engine in an 84?

So is it compatable with the later 190E?
