95 C280 Rear Bearing Removal

Having trouble getting to the rear bearings to replace. Can someone please explains the steps? I have attached a picture of where I am currently stuck.

i dont have one of them cars but is the bearing a single solid unit which need a compressor to fit or inner and outer tappered bearings??

Single unit...bought the the bearing already assembled from Autozone (already connected to hub).

on your picy you will note larger holes on the hub this is to allow a sochet to be inserted for hub removal and must be turned for each bolt, first remove the main centre bolt

What's your suggestion? Did you see the pic I posted...do I pry off that part that appears to be connect some how to the axle?

i seen the pic and it needs to be hammered from the rear and could be very tight which is normal but it will give unless you have an expensive puller

Not sure what you all got planned but, you aren't going to do anything by prying.

You need a puller to push the axle from the wheel flange, then you must get the axle flange out of the bearing which is held into the bearing carrier by a large snap-ring which isn't exposed til the flange is removed. Special tools make a b*tch of a job out of an impossible one. If its stuck it ain't no fun.

Mr. Brotherton is correct. Without the puller or press, getting the axle flange out from the bearing in the wheel carrier and then the bearing from the carrier itself can be next to impossible.

My worst experience with such a task required a hydrualic press (very powerful) to remove a 175K mile bearing from the carrier of a SAAB. I'm sorry for the pessimism and state with respect that the point of the procedure at which you've begun to ask questions is evidence that you may have additional challenges with the meat of the procedure.

One solution is to remove the wheel carrier and bring to a machine shop that can remove the flange, press out the old bearing and press in the new one.

Hopefully, you can prove me wrong and the job will proceed smoothly.

The picture of the exposed area and the advice is exactly what I needed 'stevebfl' and '104.992'!!! Now I am wondering if I should attempt it. I believe Autozone gave me the wrong part because the bearing is in cased in a housing with four studs coming out of it...going to get a pulller this morning to at least look at what I am up against. P.S. Do they make a shop manual for the C280 for sell to the public? Thanks again for the advice.

I couldn't find a Mercedes manual. Haynes and Clymer both offer one, however.

having the right tools when you need them is a bonus but if you dont then other means are possible :)

Hello Steve,

Unfortunately for me, I am still working on this wheel bearing. What is the best way to go about getting the axle flange out?

Your advice is greatly appreciated! Ken
