Euro 280SL Clutch Problem

Last week I bought a 1984 280SL with a 5-speed. The car has 181K. The clutch works, but is very stiff and has zero play at the top. The pedal goes down about 3/4 of normal travel and stops very solidly.

I was told that if the clutch master was replaced, the rod to the pedal also needed to be replaced with a shorter version. It seems to me that if the rod is too long, then this could cause the problem described.

I am also thinking that the slave cylinder may be the wrong model and is moving the clutch arm farther than it should

Anyone have any experience or ideas about this?

TIA
