1980 500SEL Euro Car? Gas Mileage?

1980 500SEL Euro Car? Gas Mileage?

Hi
How can you tell if the car was a Euro car or a US market car?

The vin # is 12603612001173*

Also how do they do for highway gas mileage?

Thanks

The US version of the 500SEL did not come over until 1984 and 1985. So, if you have a 1980 (the very first year of the w126 body in Europe) then you certainly have a euro car. I wouldn't expect better than 15mpg on the highway, about 10-12 around town.

eurocars [at least merc] vin start with model number.

way back they all started with model number, i think it ended in u.s in later '70's.

gas mileage

you most likely won't get much, and you'll have to burn premium.

this will not be an inexpensive car.

i love 'em, but they are not cheap to gas and maintain...

if you currently are looking for something that won't take time, energy, and money to keep going, you may want to seriously keep looking.

do a "search" on grey market or gray market, great info

Ok thanks for the info. Might be able to get one super super cheap. Clean but has 190K on it. Didn’t know if it was worth anything. I heard if it is a Euro car which it is that without the emissions equipment it will get pretty good gas mileage. Like 17-20?

Your car is a Euro.
Euro VIN starts with 126...
USA VIN starts with WDB...

Fuel economy...Euro 5.0 Liter V8...hmmm not good. Here is why:

Euro
4,973cc, 96.5 x 85mm, V8-cyl OHC, type M117, Bosch fuel injection, 240bhp at 4,750rpm; 296.6lb.ft at 3,200 rpm (to spring 1981)

vs

USA
184bhp at 4,500rpm; 247lb.ft at 2,000 rpm (US models)

Check out this website. It has a lot of information to help you:

Yes, the euro 500SE/SEL had more horsepower due to the lack of emissions equipment and higher compression ratio. It's a real "bahn burner".
