Reinitialize after MAF replacement?

So what’s this I hear about reinitializing the computer after changing a mass airflow sensor? My sensor is shot (i.e. the filament is visibly broken) and I am going to replace it with a rebuilt unit ($305 btw….is that a good price?). The parts guy said something to the effect that the computer has leaned new values (its supposed to be 1?) and it needs to be reset?

Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is this something I can do myself?

This is on a 1994 E420.

driving the car 40-50 miles will accomplish the same thing!!

I swear, this site is WAY too good to me.

Thanks M.B.DOC you always have the answers I need!

wanna know something funny.....having this resource [MercedesShop] does have a HUGE influence in my car-make decision process. It, among other things of course, does lead me to opt for benzs pretty much every time. My coworkers think I'm a drug dealer. :D

This site has saved me THOUSANDS of dollars; too bad for the local $tealers.

Even if the dealer would offer to reset the self-adaptation for free, I'd still recommend NOT doing it. Let the engine readapt by itself, lots easier that way.

AtlBenz, before I replaced my MAF, I cleared the fault code (10) using the pushbutton by the CAN. I then disconnected the battery while replacing the MAF. Reconnected the battery after the install and it's been great, no more CEL.
