battery water tip?

kind of a basic question, but I need to add some distilled water to my OEM mercedes battery. I see the MIN and MAX marks on the outside of the battery and if I get the placement right can see the water level in the cells through the case with battery removed from car.
Anyone have a tip for adding the water to the right level without removing the battery from the car?

Though I have a self-leveling filler (fills to the correct level then shuts the supply off) it really does not work well with the battery in the car. I prefer to fill them out of the car so if I make a mistake, it does not accumulate on or under the battery tray. Someone with more Benz experience may have answers to your specifi vehicle (didn't notice that you posted it).

You hold a small flashlight lens right against the case at each cell..you will then see the line cuased by the light refraction.......

My car is a 1998 C230 with the large white battery.
What is a self leveling filler?

It is sold in parts stores and holds approximately a quart of liquid. It has a spring loaded float and will not disperse any liquid until the spigot is inserted in a battery hole and pressed. Then the water flows until the float rises. Each cell gets filled this way to the approximate correct level. It is a gadget. I still like filling slowly with the battery out of the vehicle and rarely use the self-leveling filler.
