Question on replacing idler steering arm bushing in 300TE
 

Does one have to take out the exhaust in order to remove the bolt
that holds the bushing in the idler steering arm in 1989 300TE?
The old bushings were just worn completely and they just popped out when
I removed the nut. But the bolt hits the exhaust as it is right above the
nut. As per the MB manual, there is no mention of this.
If I do cut off the bolt, can I put the nut from the bottom and nut on the top
when I reinstall.
I am missing something here?

Did you do a search? I remember reading about someone having a clever solution to this problem.

Remove bolt from right motor mount and lift the engine slightly, about 2" seems to be enough.

Thank you Gilly for letting me know.
Surprisingly, there is no mention of this in the MB manuals anywhere for the 12 chassis.
What happens if I was to put the bolt from the bottom and the nut on the top??

Tricky method to install idler steering arm bushing in 124 chassis
 

When installing, do not install the bushing by itself.
Put the bolt thru the steering arm, washers, and the bushing.
Then push the bolt thru and then put the bottom bushing and tap in
slightly and then finish the install.
The MB book says to install the bushing in first and then the bolt.
I also used soap and water on the bushing to help slide in.
I was told this is the same setup used in other chassis of MB

I don't know what happens if you do it that way; I'm a good German and put it back together the way it was. I feel that it's easier to torque the nut when it's reassembled correctly. I'd rather not torque the bolt, no idea if this would give the proper torque.
