Issues to look for on a 1990 300SEL with 204k miles?
I was out cruising around tonight, and I came across a 1990 300SEL with 204k miles for $4000. The paint and leather interior look flawless, and didn't appear to have any leaks. My question now is, what are the major issues to look for on a car with this many miles? Would this be a car that would have issues with the wiring harness? I'm not as familiar with the ga$$ers as I am with the diesels.

I drove by and looked at the car again today, in the daylight, and I noticed some surface rust, and tears in the interior. I'm going to pass on this one, because to me it's only worth $2500-$3000, and I doubt the seller would take that offer...

Check what records are available.
Same engine an in a 300E so read up on that. The engine is easy to service but you can lose your sanity chasing rough idle and two cranks to start when warm. Someone quoted the manual in saying that two cranks to start when warm is normal. I doubt anyone would pay $50K for a new car that behaved like that. Expect to need a head gasket and valve seals, possibly valves guides if it hasn't had a valve job. Put a hedge bet on the transmission if it hasn't been rebuilt. The wiring harness should be fine. They should start with one crank, hot or cold like mine. If you’re looking for a 126 the 300 SE/L is a good choice. Find one with half those miles and you’ll be good to go.
