Rack And Pinion Leaking
My 97 e320 rack and pinion is leaking, the dealer says it has to be replaced for about $3000 (cad) plus labour.
They say there is no seal kit available. Is it possible to fix the leak without replacing the rack and pinion? If so, what is necessary for the job ? Your help greatly appreciated. |
rack
did they tell you where it is leaking from?

MB issued a repair info Service Bulletin on that repait over 6 months ago on "how" to reseal that steering rack. MB also offers a REMAN unit for that car
Part number 210-460-25-00-88 for $1600 list (USA). Any parts store that can buy from ZF can also get the same unit from them! ZF is OE on that rack. |

Where can I get a copy of that bulletin? Where can I buy the seal kit or parts necessary to seal the rack and how can I do it on my own? Thanks |
Are there any symptoms of a bad rack other than leaking? If so, what are they?

There are no other symptoms of a bad rack, only leaking on both sides, odometer is approx 24k miles.
Is it possible to get aftermarket seals and match them to my rack and replace them? as the MB dealer does not sell any seal kit for it? Thank you again |
