Tranny won't shift to 4th

I did a search and could not find anything close to my problem. My tranny sometimes won't shift to 4th gear (I have a 4th speed auto). I have a 95 C220.

I got to the freeway and started accelerating but the gear reamined in 3rd thus the high RPM. I released the gas pedal and downshifted to third and back to D. Then it engaged to 4th. When it shifted though, it wasn't the usual kick we feel when shifting. It felt like the "clutch was slipping". I tested the car by shifting manually and it woked fine. If I'm in "D" it would sometimes take along time to go to 4th or not at all.

What is this..... :(

You could have a broken piston in the valves bodies K2 accumulator, 3 / 4 shift, or a leak in the K2 drum, internal. Does the fluid smell burnt. Does reverse slips, do you have engine braking with the selector lever in ‘2’?

None of the above...yet. Reverse and 1 to 3 works fine. It's the 4th that sometimes doesn't shift. I shift it to N then back to D. Does my kick down switch have anything to do with this coz I hardly use it. I have a tiny leak in the transmission area though. I checked the fluid level and it is still good

Me too, kinda

I have a '75 240D that does not shift into 4th. I found a wire on the passenger side of the tranny that was broken off, does this have anything to do with it? All other gears work just fine. Is this the B2 doodad that I read about in other posts? What else can I check?
Thanks a bunch!

I had a similiar experience with my 97 C230.... would not shift into fourth.

Cause = I was way low on transmission fluid.

I had consulted several "experts" and everyone told me that low fluid would not cause such a situation. Well, I changed the fluid, put in a new filter and transmission was "normal" again.

When you check your fluid level >make sure car is on level ground, transmission fluid is at "operating temp" = 80C [trans fluid temp >>not necessarily coolant operating temp] I use an infrared thermoter > ping the tranny pan to get tranny fluid operating temp.

If it's not fluid level that is causing the no-shift situation > then it could be transmission "valve body .. K2 " > I have no experience with these components.
