No xmission dip stick????

Receint purchase of 97 SL-320 and found some xmission fluid around the hose from the radiator. Went to check fluid level and found "NO" dip stick. Owners manual confermed this model/year has no xmission dip stick?? How do you conferm the fluid level in xmission?? Is there a kit to install same. I'am an old DIY'er and can do most things this side of engine or xmission work. Thanks for any input...Ron

You can buy a transmission dipstick from the dealer.
It would serve as a " guide " only, as our transmissions are VERY sensitive to the correct level of fluid, which is read & TEMPERATURE COMPENSATED, by the dealer, with a very special $$$$$$$ tool.
Yeah, I know, things are not what they use to be. ;)

I have the same thing on my 99 e320. The dealer said there should never be a need to check the tranny fluid if it is changed according to specs. Is that the apitimy of arogance on MBs part or what?

Thanks for the input, I'll check with the dealer while holding tight to my wallet. Ron

The dipstick is a tool. it can't be left in the tube as it is about two feet longer than the tube. Instead of reading from the top down as most dipsticks do, it reads from the bottom up. in other words it reads how deep the fluid is, from the bottom of the pan.

Many late non servicable transmissions have no provision for dipsticks at all. BMW, VW/Audi, Jag are all without any provision for a dip stick. They all require reading trans temp from the diagnostic computer and then use one mechanism or other to evaluate the fluid level.

The new 722.9 7speed is like the BMW ones with no dipstick provision at all.

Apparently drain plug is used to fill it. Not easy for DIY!
