Full Load Rear Clunk
Hey folks,
Driving home in my 1984 300D last night, I noticed a hollow-sounding metal clunk coming from the rear suspension. This comes after a friend used the benz to move a few hundred pounds of inventory around. The sound comes during moderate -to- full load on the suspension - i.e. quicker corners, moderate-heavy braking, and jumping up and down on the bumper. Does anyone have any insight into what this could be? I've done a visual and things look fine. I can't locate any oil leaks around the shock, and the sway bar is in good shape. Thanks in advance for any input. All the best, Joey BioBenz 1984 300D on BioD |

Check the sway bar mouts -- if they are not tight agains the bar, it will thump.
Look at the spring, too -- they have a tendency to break the first coil off when they get old, this will clonk. Also check the upper shock mount and the rubber in the sleeve on the bottom, if those go, it bangs terribly. Peter |
Thanks, guys. I'll check both of your suggestions out.

Clunk B Gone
After inspection, the clunk disappeared. Obviously little green men.
Thanks again, Joey |
Check for a broken or lost exhaust system hanger. (Rubber rings that suspend the exhaust system)
