Crossover Pipe Insulation - M116 Engine

On a 1989 420 SEL, I see the accordion type metal covering that goes over the asbestos fabric on the crossover pipe has rusted completely. I am thinking about wrapping some of that flexible aluminums 3" venting pipe, like an accordion, over the asbestos. I know the pipe is less that 3 inches so I'll cut a section out to make it fit tight.

Has anyone done this before? Is there an easy way to get the shielding back on? Will the aluminium pipe be OK?
