no power steering on right turn

I am having trouble turning the car, (Mercedes 1983 300SD) to the right. The power steering stops working. The steering is fine turning left. I first checked the fluid level and added a little. I am guessing that it is my gear box. Would a kit help this. I am guessing that the rubber seals are breaking down.

Strange stuff and sounds as if it may have a broken control valve spring in the power steering gear.

If you can put the front of the car on jackstands, both tires off the ground, point the tires straight ahead and start the engine. If the tires automatically steer either right or left, on their own, then you definitely have a problem. The box must be either repaired or replaced.

Thanks

Thanks, will give it a try. How hard is it to replace those springs and seals?

My 1971 250C did this when the level went low and I turned rather quickly to the left. It started making a lot of noise when turning right.
Turned out to be air in the system. The older ones have a bleed screw on the top of the box, I put a hose on it and into the res. Started the car and turned the wheel back and forth till there were no more bubbles.
Works great now.

replaced gear box

I was able to replace the gear box. Find one at a local yard for $95.00. Installed it and everything is working fine. Need to do an adjustment to the steering wheel. Just a little off from being staight. Next project is to replace the seal in the pump. Thanks for the help.
