Clean Air Intake - 260E
How does air that a driver and passengers breath come inside a car? Where is the air intake for heating system? Are any filters there?
Tnx. |
The air intake for the heater and A/C system is near the windshield, under the wiper arm.
There is no air filter on a 260E. JackD |
There is a replaceable air filter behind the plastic grills in the back of the engine compartment under the front windshield (visible with the hood closed).
There also may be other charcoal? filters but I'm not sure. |
The charcoal filter is under the windshield wiper assembly and there is a recirculated air filter under the glove box under the dash.

The last 2 posts make me perplex.
I have a 1989 260E. I once inquired at my MB dealer about replacing those filters at regular intervals and I was told 260E's were not equipped with this feature. Only the 300 or 420 were. JackD |

I see... I looked up service manual on the CD for the 87 260E and did'nt notice the model 129 and model 140 at the top of the page.
Sorry about my confusingness. Question: Why do they ask you the year/model (on the CD) and then just give you everything? |
They are comprehensive manuals, and the R109 chassis is very similar to (and derived from) the W124.
No air filters before 1992, I think, except maybe the R109 chassis. Certainly not on an 87 or 88 (I have both). Peter |
Are you saying that air comes directly from outside (from under a windshield wipper) to a heater core? So, it is not supposed to be any communication with engine compartment?
So, if I have smell inside - possiblely burn oil from the engine leak, and it seems to be mostly on high speed, or on the morning after car staying in a garage (not much smell in a garage, but great deal of smell inside the car). |
oil smell too
I have 1992 300E and seem to have an oil smell also inside the car. No real bad leaks noticed anywhere. Any one know if mine has filters or how an oil smell could get in? Anyone tried spraying lysol in the incoming vent to clear musty or any type of vent smells? A local car wash has an ionizer machine, was thinking of trying that. Opinions?
Thanks, Jeff |
bump,
Anyone ever have to resolve an issue like this? Thanks, Jeff |
just went through this problem.
I just went through this problem on the 95S. Oil was leaking from the valve cover seals (around spark plugs) and dripped from the back of the cover (passenger side, at gasket level) onto the exhaust manifold. Was worse idling after a run.
Changed the valve cover gasket (including sparkplug gaskets), rebuttoned it up and now no more leaking oil/smell. Take a good look at the back of the engine. I had to swipe it with my hand to find the trace of oil leaking. Ron |
