Where's this popping noise coming from?
 

I have a 87 420 SEL with 150k on it. Lately I have begun to hear a muffled popping sound coming from the RR after I have braked at a stop sign. I also hear it after I have pulled the car into the garage, turned the key off and am walking out the garage door.
I haven’t looked under the car yet, but my suspicions are its brake related. Anyone else have any ideas where to focus on or had this problem before? Thanks

I'm curious as to how a cars brake system could emit a popping sound with the vehicle at rest and the engine turned off?

I would be more suspicious of the exhaust system..ie..catalytic converter.
Some kind of "heat soak" if you will in the exhaust system.

Mine does the same thing - 1990 420SEL. It is the exhaust system cooling - don't ask how I found this out!!!

Is this what Ive been hearing?

Sometimes a few seconds after coming to a full stop I will hear a muffled noise, almost like a door being shut. Cant locate the source.

What is it?
