Sudden Transmission Failure (98 S420)

This weekend went from all is good, to no transmission. Surged, shook, and shuttered. Got under way and hit the hiway. When I went to stop, the car wouldn't shift into gear again. Shuttered and shook on take off. Drove straight to a mechanic and left car in their lot Saturday night. No response on any of the gears (no reverse, 1st, 2nd, etc). Would like to know the possiblities before I talk to the mechanic on Monday. Any ideas??? Cost??
Thanks,
Kevin

Cost, worse case scenario, $3000-$4000 for a new transmission. Could be a bad electronic shift valve or bad rpm sensor (conductor plate). Need to check ETC for fault codes.
