Need a Gilley guess (or fact) 722.6

I have posted this before, and have searched for at least a year.

I have a 97 210 722.6 transmission that has had a problem since birth. I have the original owners paperwork where he complains of a banging into gear after coasting, like slowing for a light then accelerating when it changes.

My explanation is that it is only a 2nd to 3rd shift problem. It will slip about 500rpm and then firmly engage. If I drive very cautiously, gentle throttle, it shifts seemingly normal. And of course it will slip and reengage harshly after coasting(only 2nd to 3rd) as the original owner suggested. The bills reflect only test drives with "could not duplicate" , and it is possibly worse when it is up to temperature.

For my troubleshooting, I had local MB put it on the computer, no faults. I did replace a leaking plug adapter (and MB fluid/filter ) at 164,000miles. The plug was full of fluid. No apparent change. MB tech said he had not seen a bad plate or solonoid without a computer fault.

What do you think it could be, was there an ETC recall or .....
I have 177,000 on it now, I bought it knowing the fault. (it had gone 130k before I bought it and hadn't failed) I would just like it to shift normally.

Gilly has no "e"

From my 722.6 complaint/cause/remedy info:

Complaint:"Hard 2-3 upshift when stepping off the accelerator pedal"
Cause:"Response characteristic control loop K2"
Remedy: Install K2 disc spring.
K2 disc spring in serial production 6/15/99

There is another one for Upshift 2-3, 3-4 slipping, I assume your 3-4 is fine so this wouldn't pertain to you.

Another one says "Engine turns up while 2-3 upshift and/or hard 3-2 downshift. "Engine turns up", huh? What are they getting at? For that they say "oil level too low", "Oil filter not installed" or "Free wheeling unit F2 defective".

One last one is "Grabbing 2-3 coasting upshift and/or 3-2 brake downshift"
Causes listed are again low oil or no oil filter, OR "Control, shift or command valve blocked (particle), or K3 discs burnt, hot spots, or rubbed down.

I would look at the first one I listed, make it sound like that spring was added to the later trnnies (after June 15 1999).

Thank you Mr. G

This sounds like a transmission shop job? or is it in the conductor plate area?

Yeah trannies coming out if you want to install the spring.

Mr G,

My '98 seems to have this particular sickness. What $ am I looking at to get that spring in there? Anything I could tackle myself? I have ramps but no fancy lifts. Are these things called the joy of owning a Mercedes? Just want to make sure this is joy and not something else.

mpolli,

Mike, you could...maybe..I would have , except time constraints.
Before I could get to it, my conductor plate went south. When the conductor plate fails it will just go nuts, shifting up and down..finally stuck in second..limp home.

I was going out of town, took it to Snyder's in Spartanburg. They have a good shop, They confirmed the conductor plate and did a "service". This included the conductor plate, filter, and fluid...about $480.00. While it was open I asked them to order the spring (70 cents) and install it. This is not the spring mentioned by Gilly. It doesn't require removal of xmission. I think it is a solonoid spring..I'll send you a forward of a private message from Steve B....I probably need the Gilly fix also...when I need to drop the trans.

Shifting is way better...still an occasional bump 2-3 shift. For the price if you have a good independant I'd let them handle it. It's the most I have spent in 3 years and 70,000 miles..pretty good for a 97 E320 with 190,000 miles.

The 97 car also sounds like the control pressure spring thingy. It is simple to check and replace if broken.

Jeff Hartmann 09-04-2005 12:34 PM

Steve,
Are you talking about 140 993 58 01...or another?

I had them install the one on the right side of the valve body, second from the rear.

mpolli 09-04-2005 06:37 PM

The only spring Gilly merntioned was the "K2 disk spring". What spring are you talking about if not that one? The "control pressure spring thingy"?
Thingy???
