O rings on tranny
Come on folks this is my second posting of this with not one reply. I got to get this fixed! It's like you say the word "tranny" & everyone starts running for the hills.
DIYers: Just bought an '87 300TD that's leaking tranny fluid like a stuck pig. Took it to my local Benz guy who sold me 3 o rings to replace on the rear of the tranny. The passenger side seems fairly simple but the driver side looks strange. I can't figure out how to remove the cover that presses the o ring into place against the tranny. There are no visible nuts or bolts holding the cover in place. There is some type of clip in the center of the cover that looks like you may be able slip a screw driver in it & turn it but that doesn't seem correct. This cover is located just to the rear of the wiring harness that attaches to the tranny. Do I need a special tool to remove this cover? Please help. |

Those covers are spring loaded from the backside and an MB special tool is used to compress the spring/cover to remove the snap ring so you can access the o-rings. You can try it with a prybar or something, I never have because I've always had the tools, but I'm sure you could figure something out. The spring tension is not that firm.
