Self Leveling On W124 Models
 

I have a general question about the self leveling system on the W124.I remember that many years ago I installed regular shocks on a W123 wagon with self leveling because I did not want to spend the money and rebuild the original system,I discovered that the body had the holes for regular shocks,like a sedan,covered with plastic caps,so,I disconected the original system and installed two gas shocks...and they did just fine for me at that time.How about the W124?,can you still convert them so easy like the old ones?

I believe the strut is the same shape and fittings as the shocks, so it should be as simple.

I'm not going to do that with my wagon -- at 220,000 miles the self leveling works perfectly.

As I understand and was told by several M.B. mechanics, the conversion setup to transform a W124 wagon from self levelling to the normal sedan setup is almost impossible and would be incredibly expensive.

But, if you can do it straight forward and cheap (and works fine), I would love to hear how you did it.

You have to replace lower control arms to ones from non-leveling car & then have CUSTOM shocks made, as the standard ones are WAY too long!!
ALSO springs from a non-leveling system must be installed.
